A Devout Optimist
Good Morning,
Joe Pelayo here, writing to you from San Francisco, the rockingest city in the United States. Did you see the article? San Francisco is the rockingest city in the U.S.A., according to a new study by a market research firm.
San Franciscans go to more rock concerts than any other city in the country.
Another article on the same day, same section, said that Duran Duran was going to release a new album after having had mercy on us since 1983. The article went on to say that the British pop quintet was among the biggest “rock” acts in the world in the early ’80s. It dawned on me that perhaps we here in SF have a more liberal idea of what constitutes rock!
Okay, okay I know it’s slightly more cynical than my normal upbeat tone. You know me, deep down inside I am a devout optimist. I can prove it; I have Warriors season tickets! I got the below award winning cynical email last month from a subscriber, maybe it’s rubbing off on me. Here’s what they asked me…
Thanks for the mail…
So I ask you: what makes you think that the predicted skilled worker shortage will have any effect on the US employment situation for US-born workers except to make offshore recruiters and H1B foreigners rich, exactly as it is now.
I assure you that H1B’s are not a bit worried about their situation:
Just go to www.indiatimes.com and search on “H1B”—the Indians have it all figured out and are not a bit worried about their futures in the US.

The US economy can’t survive the short-term without massive quantities of “cheap” foreign oil which dictates monetary and fiscal policy that keeps the value of the dollar high.
As long as the exchange rate is so favorable to importing cheaper people or outsourcing jobs, economics will drive jobs out of the US and continue to drive imports at long-term unsustainable levels—and the US politicians will make sure that there is only lip-service to the contrary.

BTW, what job skills do you predict will be scarce in the next 5 or so years?
“A pessimist blood type is always B negative.”
Now I know you think I make some of this stuff up, but I’m telling you this was a real email. I felt like responding to the person like this: We have studied matters intensely and found that there will be an incredible demand for devout optimists in all fields. But I thought that might be viewed as mean spirited. Even if it wasn’t I didn’t care to get into a dialog with this person. So I just deleted this person from my mailing list.
I only want to associate with people who look for the good in the world. Call me Pollyanna if you want to but it’s better than being Polly-down-trodden. Certainly I know there are people who believe that all politicians are corrupt, but I don’t. If you do, you won’t like my newsletter. I believe that we are in command of our lives. I believe that we are not going to do well simply because the government puts in the right policy. If people want to come to this country from other countries I think that’s a huge win for us. The winners migrate, the ones who believe in making the best for themselves. The ones who believe life is 10% what happens to you and 90% what you do with your circumstances. The ones who believe we are a living miracle and if we live passionately in a way that pleases God we can create our own circumstance.
Republican or Democrat, you have to like what Teddy Roosevelt once said:
“It is not the critic who counts, nor the man who points out where the strong man stumbled, or where a doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man in the arena whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs, and who comes up short again and again, who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause. The man who at best knows the triumph of high achievement and who at worst, if he fails, fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who never knew victory or defeat.”
“Take some chances and don’t concern yourself with circumstances.”
Here are some interesting networking events coming up where you can meet me and other devout optimists. See you soon:
