The most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Employment Situation report for July 2025 shows a stable yet cautious job market. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 73,000 jobs, with little net change since April. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%, remaining in a narrow range of 4.0% to 4.2% since May 2024. Key sectors like health care added 55,000 jobs, primarily in ambulatory services and hospitals, while social assistance saw an uptrend of 18,000 positions. However, federal government employment declined by 12,000, and other major industries showed minimal changes. Average hourly earnings rose by 0.3% to $36.44, reflecting a 3.9% increase over the past year. Notably, revisions to prior months’ data were downward, with May and June combined lower by 258,000 jobs than initially reported, signaling a softening in momentum. The labor force participation rate edged down to 62.2%, and long-term unemployment rose to 1.8 million.
