Executive recruiters name board members

San Francisco executive recruiter Joe Pelayo, president and chief executive officer of Joseph Michaels Inc., was named to the Board of Directors of the Pinnacle Society, a national organization recognizing the 75 top-producing executive recruiters in the United States. Pelayo will serve as the society’s public relations chair. Pelayo, 36, also founded BayCFO, a private club of 500 chief financial officers in the Bay Area and he currently serves as the organization’s chairman.

Dear Joe:

My company has been acquired. The new company has assured us they will make no immediate changes, but they are headquartered in Chicago. I have no reason to look for a new job, I love my job and my co-workers, yet I fear that in time it doesn’t make sense for the new company to have two accounting departments. My gut tells me they will eventually consolidate and that I should get my resume together even though I have no “reason for leaving” other than a possible someday down-the-line consolidation?

Dear Duplicate Accounting Department Member:

When ever a company acquires another, the first thing they do is assure the acquired company’s employees that they have no plans for immediate changes. And they don’t. First, they want to understand all that they have acquired, then plan strategic changes.

It has been this headhunter’s experience that 90% of the time with acquisition, comes consolidation, job cuts and elimination of duplicate responsibilities. Without an updated resume you are a sitting duck. At least with an updated resume you can explore your options, and because you look does not mean you have to leap, right?

In summary, always trust your gut.

From desktops and laptops, to PDAs and phones, digital cameras and music players, many consumers will make at least one personal technology purchase in December.

Just in time for the holidays, the Churchill Club brings you two of the most influential journalists in technology today to lead this show-and-tell with discussion on the strengths and weaknesses as well as trends in consumer electronics and gadgets. Joining the journalists will be two Silicon Valley executives who are noted gadget aficionados (Google’s Larry Page was one of last year’s panelists). The panel will talk about their favorite consumer tech products and which ones they consider over-rated. They will name names and candidly answer your questions.

Walt Mossberg is the author and creator of the weekly “Personal Technology” column, which appears in The Wall Street Journal. Newsweek magazine calls him “the most powerful arbiter of consumer tastes in the computer world today.” Kara Swisher is a technology writer in The Wall Street Journal’s San Francisco bureau, where she writes on high tech issues in a column called “Boom Town.” She is author of two books on the rise and fall of America Online. Together, Mossberg and Swisher are the producers of a major annual technology conference, “D: All Things Digital.”
