A true story! …
Finding a Chief Financial Officer
A few years ago a venture capitalist friend of mine who was backing a high tech company, hired me to find a CFO. Our firm put the word out and I got the below reply from a Controller friend of mine. He got a promotion to CFO and I got a retained search. Here’s the story…
I wrote my Controller friend about the CFO search to see who he knew and he replied…
Keep us in mind, things are going very well here at _____ and we are going to need a CFO, like the one you describe, in the very near future.”
Good to hear from you and glad to hear things are going so well there. But, are you out of your mind? How do you think guys get to be CFO? They know you over there – they know how great you are. You have been there since the very beginning. Do WHATEVER you have to do to get them to give YOU the job. Maybe it’s a long shot but, if you don’t ask, you don’t get. And yes, of course if they won’t give you a shot I would be pleased to do the CFO search and I do appreciate you keeping me in mind.”
A few years later (recently) I got this from my friend:
I got the CFO nod, you might have read, we went public and I need a Controller!”
Here then is my new marketing strategy. I get you promoted and then you retain me to find your replacement.
