1. Do your research
Before you decide, understand the different types of recruiting firms out there. Not all firms are created equal, and many specialize in certain industries or types of positions. Taking the time to understand your options helps you choose a firm that’s a good fit for your needs.
2. Get recommendations
If you’re not sure where to start, ask friends and colleagues for recommendations. Start with the highest level people you know in your field, and look for the oldest and most experienced people you can find for your referrals. Chances are, someone you know has worked successfully with a recruiting firm near you and can share their experience. They may even give you the name of the Recruiter they would recommend.
3. Read online reviews, with a grain of salt
Reviews can give you an idea of what other companies have experienced with a particular firm. Keep in mind that not every review is accurate. Some may be biased, or written by a candidate who didn’t get the job! Taken with a grain of salt, they still give you an overall sense of what to expect.

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, reach out to the firms and talk with them. Ask specific questions about their experience and their success rates. You’ll learn a lot about what it’s like to work with them.
5. Choose experience that lasts
You probably want to avoid brand new Recruiters and brand new recruiting firms. Our industry sees a lot of turnover, and you want someone who will still be around the next time you need them.
