Being called an “old soul” can be a real compliment, especially in your career. It means you’re mature beyond your years and experienced in the ways of life. My wife calls me an old soul because whenever I go to a party, a wedding or a networking event, I invariably end up talking to the oldest person in the room.

An old soul is someone who somehow already has a lifetime’s worth of experience. Old souls tend to be wise beyond their years and aren’t limited by what everyone else expects. They often feel a little out of step with people their own age and more at home with people who have lived a bit longer.

That wisdom can come from exposure to different cultures, faiths and ideas, or from a long habit of deep conversations about life’s big questions. Old souls are usually independent thinkers who aren’t afraid to question conventional wisdom. They look for deeper meaning and prefer a meaningful conversation over shallow small talk.

The Benefits of Being an Old Soul

Being an old soul carries real benefits at work. It gives you perspective that others may lack. It opens your mind to new ideas and helps you grow. It makes it easier to empathize, because you understand that life can be hard at times. And it helps you connect with people whose backgrounds and experiences are different from yours, which is a big advantage in any career.

It isn’t always easy. Sometimes you’ll feel out of place in a group that doesn’t share your interests or outlook. But overall, being an old soul gives you insights that can make all the difference when you’re making decisions or facing challenges in your career or personal life.

So if someone ever calls you an old soul, take it as a compliment! You’re likely wiser than anyone gives you credit for.
