You Don’t Have Time to Respond to Your Critics!

Les Brown has told me, “You don’t have time to respond to your critics!”

I know, I know Les, but I had a weak moment, what can I say? “You’ll find me difficult to offend” is one of my favorite sayings. But we are all human, and I felt I just had to respond to this recent email.

I wrote back to this guy, a Corporate Controller at a major software company. I had left him a couple of voicemails as I had for what seemed like every software company controller in Silicon Valley, recruiting for our software industry client. I don’t want to name names so we’ll just call him “Short” so we have a name to call him.

Below you’ll find his email and my reply. It’s reminiscent of the Bubba letter that I “just had to write” a few years ago. Many of you emailed in and said you really got a kick out of the Bubba letter.

Speaking of emailing in, it would be nice to hear from you. With a subscriber base of over 50,000 now, I don’t reply to all the emails anymore. But, I DO READ THEM ALL. Be nice to get your feedback once in awhile. Be kind or beware the wrath of my Bubba-busting email!

Click the email link at the bottom of this newsletter if you feel like today is a good day to say hello to your favorite newsletter writer/Headhunter friend. Or you can reply directly to this newsletter and I’ll get it eventually.

Are you getting anything out of these newsletters? I need your feedback, long on encouragement this time around, to offset the Shorts!

All the Best!
Joe Pelayo

Joe-

I have received your messages and I don’t believe we have ever met but you are being quite aggressive and I am traveling right now. In your first message you didn’t explain who you were and made it seem like I should know you for some reason. How did you get my contact information and why the aggressive approach as I am not particularly appreciating it?

Thanks,

Short

Forgive me Short,

I assumed you knew who I was.

You know the story when we assume we make an ass out of you…

Yes, I have been accused of being an aggressive recruiter. One time a guy said that I was so aggressive that he wouldn’t use my firm Joseph Michaels, Inc. to “recruit a dog for a dog fight!” I told him we didn’t recruit dogs but I would be glad to give him the names of a few of my competitors.

I am Chairman of the BayCFO. It’s the only private club for CFOs in the Bay Area. 600 CFO members. Not just the small company CFOs, but the big ones. You may have heard of some of them:

Genentech, Pier39, The Oakland Raiders, Williams Sonoma, Clorox, etc.

I’m on a first name basis with most of them.

I began recruiting here in the Bay Area 20 years ago. I’ll admit that as a High School dropout, 17-year-old-punk, nobody really appreciated my aggressive approach. Fortunately for me I was aggressive enough to fight through the times when those people would kick dirt in my face. Now they all want to be my friend. 20 years later I am a board of directors member of The Pinnacle Society, 75 of the leading recruiters in the United States.

A big shot is just a little shot, who kept on shootin’.

The road to becoming a successful Headhunter after dropping out of High School is very narrow. I am afraid Steve, that were I not aggressive, I would not have made it down that road and I would not now be able to write to you these words which I hope will touch your heart that you might respond to strangers forevermore in a new way.

“A stranger is just a friend I haven’t met yet.” ~ Will Rogers

When you get promoted to CFO and I know you will soon, let me know. I would be glad to invite you to a meeting of the BayCFO and introduce you to some of the friends I have made over the last 20 years. Many of whom I began a relationship in much this same way with which you and I have begun our acquaintance.

“Father-God – let there be – done in and through me, that which will bring our brother to the awareness of the God within.” ~ Edgar Cayce

Thank you for reminding me I am still on that narrow road, proving myself to people daily. But, having read the Bible now cover to cover I hope you will allow me to remind you, we only need to please the Lord Jesus Christ who strengthens us, Brother. Live with great peace knowing that.

He reminds me now that we fight fire with water, not with more fire. I turn to you the other cheek, I smile and say take another shot if you like, my kind reply remains.

That’s who I am. I’m Joe Pelayo, yesterday a stranger, today maybe someone you will never forget. Regardless, may the good Lord bless you in all that you do!

Warm regards,
Joe Pelayo

Never Eat Alone

I read another great book this week called, Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi. It’s on the best-seller chart for business books at Amazon.com.

Keith went to Yale & Harvard Business School and was the youngest ever Partner at Deloitte Consulting. While he rubs elbows throughout the book with everyone from Michael Milken to Hillary Rodham Clinton, He really wins you over is with his humble beginnings. Speaking of his youth he writes….

“I was teased mercilessly about our car and my polyester clothes and fake Docksiders…”

Arnold Palmer started out as a caddie as did Ferrazzi.

“During those long stretches on the links, as I carried their bags I watched how the people who had reached professional heights unknown to my father and mother helped each other. They found one another jobs, they invested time and money in one another’s ideas, and they made sure their kids got help getting into the best schools… Poverty, I realized, wasn’t only a lack of financial resources; it was isolation from the kind of people that could help you make more of yourself.”

– I know I have been backing up your reading list lately but don’t miss this one! I’ve been recommending so many books lately that a friend of my asked me if I was in the publishing business now! Nope, still Headhunting, but I am in the learning business and I’ve found the more I learn the more I earn.

The SOX effect on Accounting and Finance salaries…

According to a survey of 1,400 members of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the average total compensation for people working in corporate finance was $124,288 last year, $110,465 for public accountants. Internal auditors saw a substantial rise in 2004, with total comp jumping 37% to $121,727.

The US unemployment rate fell to 5% from 5.1%, nearly a four-year low.
