Too Good To Be True
Good Morning,
OK, so I got a little down last month with the waning economy and all, but the truth is as Joe Walsh so eloquently put it, “Life’s been good to me so far.” Having settled into our new headquarters here in San Francisco, we are having a good year. Not quite as good as last year when the dot.com companies were literally offering us bonuses and stock on top of our regular fees to fill their jobs. That was just too good to be true. But, we are making placements and profits, getting lots of referrals and having fun.
We’ve won some great clients during the last eleven years. Our client roster now includes companies like: Applied Biosystems, AltaVista, The Academy of Art College, Asyst, Clifbar, Cisco, Clorox, Coca-Cola, Deltagen, Digital Island, Fusion Medical, Foster Farms, Intervision, Intuit, KPMG, NetManage, Norcal, The Oakland A’s, Rita Medical, Ross Stores, Volterra, Webzone and others. We thank you for your support and look forward to working with you in the years to come.
If you have been reading these emails but are still using Robert you-know-who (that one was just for fun) for your recruiting, consider this: Our recruiters have on average more than 12 years recruiting experience. I know that sounds too good to be true, but it’s true.
At one point every recruiter in my company had more recruiting industry experience than the Branch Manager in the San Francisco office of (now the gloves come off) “Bob-and-a-Quarter.” Here are more reasons to choose Joseph Michaels International, over Robert Goliath (but it’s all in good competitive fun). My brother told me about another service that sounded too good to be true. This company called Netflix sends unlimited dvd movies of his choice for $19.95 a month and they pay the postage! He can keep ’em as long as he likes. When he returns one, they send him the next movie on his list. He keeps a running list of movies he wants to rent which he can update or prioritize anytime at their website. He can have up to 3 movies out at a time.
It sounded especially too good to be true for me because I had a bad habit of forgetting to return the Blockbuster 2-night video rentals for a week or so. Nonetheless, because it sounded too good to be true, I held off. I assumed they had millions of dollars in venture backing and when that dried up they’d go out of business.
Well, a year later my brother was still bragging about the great movies he’s getting shipped right to his front door for 19.95 a month, and there was I, still driving over to Blockbuster paying $20 in late fees per movie. So I finally signed up and I’m glad I did.
Here’s another idea I thought was too good to be true, until I tried it. Go to mail2web.com and enter your email address, business or personal, and your password and get your email. I know it sounds too good to be true but it works and might eliminate the need for a laptop on some trips.
Wildfire, my virtual assistant, is too good to be true. Wildfire freed me from the shackles of my desk. I have one phone number that I give out to my clients, and Wildfire finds me wherever I am—home, work, car, mobile. I can even give her a friend’s cell phone number if my phone’s battery runs out while I’m out on the golf course, um, I mean, if I’m, “out in the field.”
A friend of mine has a delightful case of reverse paranoia. He thinks everyone is plotting to make his life wonderful. He asked me how I knew the slowing economy wasn’t God’s way of encouraging me to improve my golf game. I like his attitude, and my golf game isn’t, too good to be true…yet!
With my Kyocera Smartphone, I finally have a true phone/palm pilot combo and I can check my email while golfing. Sometimes life in general is, too good to be true.
Strangely, booking a tee time online is too good to be true, except at some courses. It would be nice to go to one website and book a tee time at any golf course in the area. Like at Opentable.com, where you book dinner reservations at hundreds of fine restaurants online. It seems too good to be true, but it’s true.
I hope that Webvan doesn’t turn out to be too good to be true, like Peapod did. Kosmo.com was too good to be true. Priceline.com I can do without, but Travelocity is too good to be true for airline and hotel reservations.
The good folks at Netzero, despite spending millions in a huge advertising campaign saying, “All Americans have a right to free Internet!” in 1999 and 2000, are now offering a “Platinum Service.” Why do I feel like they are about to infringe on the rights of those Americans? I knew that one sounded, too good to be true.
We used to spend thousands with a third party consulting firm each year to produce an annual salary survey to give to our clients each summer, but Salary.com is too good to be true.
Warm Regards,
Joe Pelayo
