The Headhunters Edge

Good Morning,

Just finished reading a great book called “The Headhunters Edge” by Jeffrey Christian. Christian as you may know, is the headhunter that recruited Carly Fiorina to be Hewlett Packard’s CEO. Having been a headhunter for the last 17 years I’ve made it a point to read all of the, “Headhunter” books as well as all the “Recruiting”, “How to Interview” and the “Career Development” books that I could ever find over the years and this is one of the best books I have ever read. Let me know what you think.

If you want to curl up with a good book, at your desk, you might want to look into one of these; A German engineer named Matthias Knigge invented a new desk that converts into a giant pillow at the push of a button. Like Batman’s car, the walnut desk looks ordinary enough until the weary worker presses a small button, activating a fan that inflates a bright orange airbag which unfolds through an opened panel on the desktop allowing for the perfect Batnap.

Speaking almost apologetically about his “airbag table”. Knigge said he hopes it doesn’t inspire people to work longer hours. He thinks it’s good for people to get out of the office after a while and “get a life”.

The Answer to All of Our Worries

Along those lines, this was sent to me by a “Network!” subscriber who wrote:

Joe, I think this is the answer to all of our worries,

1923: Business vs Golf

In 1923 do you know who was:

  1. President of the largest steel company?
  2. President of the largest gas company?
  3. President of the New York Stock Exchange?
  4. Great wheat speculator?
  5. President of the Bank International Settlement?
  6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

Now, these men should have been considered some of the world’s most successful men. At least, they found the secret of making bundles of money.

Almost 80 years later, the history book asks us, do we know what actually became of these men?

  1. The president of the largest steel company, Charles Schwab, died a pauper.
  2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane.
  3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.
  4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless.
  5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself.
  6. The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livemore, committed suicide.

However, in that same year, 1923, the winner of the most important golf championship, Gene Sarazan, won both the U.S. Open and PGA Championship.

What became of him, you ask?

Well, he played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95, and was extremely financially secure at the time of his death.

CONCLUSION: STOP WORRYING ABOUT BUSINESS AND OTHER BULLSH_T AND START PLAYING GOLF.

It sounds good to me. Hopefully we’ll be getting good golf weather soon.
